I was wondering why there are not more spaced based games.

Is Space just too big (and empty?)
- Wow has a huge world to explore but there is tons and tons of stuff. From fences to hills to chickens. Maybe space is just too boring?

Too much traveling?
- Are things just too far away?

Player Interaction
- Since everyone is inside a ship.. you can't just walk up to someone and talk/flirt/etc. Plus if 2 ships collide there should be some damage where in WOW you could just walk up to someone and say hi.

What are your thoughts on this? There is sooo much Sci-Fi literature/movies etc. But all the games out there are all D&D sword and sorcery types...

For MMOs? Precedent mostly, but space-based games are out there. And they're not going to play anything remotely like WoW. Again, precedent. The mechanics that MMOs have been iterating (your avatar is one person, and the roles that the game forces you into, like tank, nuke, healer) apply best to swords and sorcery.

I would say that all of those are reasons why space MMOs are not really popular. Most of these questions seems to stem from EVE Online. I was big into EVE for a while, but it quickly became boring and unbelievably frustrating so I got out and haven't been back for almost a year now. If you are looking for a game that encompasses everything Carmine outlined, EVE Online is the game for you.

Vendetta Online is pretty good. I played it back when it was still quite young. I don't know where it is at currently. I liked it because focused on twitch skill which I felt EVE lacked. Check it out, there is a free trial.

Space will always require 3d movement, which can lead to a surprising amount of interface problems, limitations on gameplay, etc. I would say that the one space game that found a way to overcome these issues with the most effectiveness was Homeworld / Homeworld 2. (I know a few folks have mentioned MMOs, but the challenges inherent to space games are identical in both MMOs and non-MMOs)

Also, in a sparse 3d environment, it's difficult to build any kind of an atmosphere that attracts people to different parts of a universe. Even with Homeworld, you could never create the kind of lush and dynamic maps for gameplay that you could with the most low-budget 2d games. Before I thought about this problem, I never realized how important the aesthetics of a game environment / world are, but it's pretty clear that they can make or break games once you look at the space genre.

Other than interface and environment, the problems with creating a space game are the same as creating any other game. Since fewer people have tried, though, there's even fewer projects that have actually come through with something fun. You're right about the content issue - there's a lot of really fun space IP out there - but a well-implemented creative storyline is even more rare than a well-implemented space game.
