Someone pointed out in the open letter thread that most of the tutorials Carlos has just made accessible are out of date. Corun suggested that we hold a tutorial contest to remedy this. Discuss amongst yourselves.

My ideas:
-Vote on both best tutorial and best contributor. Many small-to-medium tutorials for brief "how-do-I-do-this?" moments can be just as useful as one big "make-a-game-from-start-to-finish" tutorial.
-Give the top two winners in each category an über membership for a few months. Maybe they'll actually put some content there.

(To be determined by thread participants, recorded herein, and disputed below thusly.)
-Two voting categories: Best Tutorial, Best Contributor
-All tutorials must have been started after 12:00am GMT on Saturday, May 24, 2008
-Entrants must post the topic(s) of their tutorial(s) on a thread to be created in the future
-All entries must be completed within exactly two weeks

Great idea. I'd definitely be in.

Would you get bonus points for being Mac-specific? Cause I'd probably want to do something related to preparing 3D models for use in a game, which would apply equally to any platform.

I don't think it should have o be Mac-Specific, as long as it is not any other OS specific, i.e as long as your tutorial does not require Windows, or Linux, it would be fine. I also think that tutorials should be made on a Mac, so the interface looks native.

But, that's just my $5

If this gets organized, I'm in.

He wins, but he has to work harder? Rasp

I'm in. It would be nice to have some up to date stuff on the net.

I like the idea, it could be useful to disclose what people are working on so we avoid duplicates. If no one else is doing it I could provide a simple sdl-opengl-C++ template with the basic stuff.

Great. Let's start on Friday/Saturday at 12am GMT. We have that week to come up with prizes and get Carlos to come out of his hole.

Edit: Oh, and I'm thinking two weeks for length.

I might be in. I'm contemplating writing a networking tutorial. It would be a very simple (I hope, but even my "I'll just make a simple match making server" has turned into quite a beast.) tutorial to get the user up to speed on getting two clients to talk to each other, and common pitfalls one might experience, i.e. my current struggle, cleanly closing all sockets (especially on a server crash).

Of course this is just contemplation. If someone more suited or more enthusiastic comes along who would like to do this, I'll gladly step aside, however I may not even do it at all.

P.S. Is this even a good subject for a tutorial?

Not that I like to toot my own horn or anything, but I've been thinking about making some better Chipmunk Physics tutorials for a while. Maybe such a contest would give me the motivation.

Hmm, what's the time limit? I'm booked for the next couple weeks, but I can probably hack one together in that time, even if it's just a small tutorial.

Tutorial contest? - stevejohnson - May 21, 2008 07:10 PM

Let's go with two weeks, shall we?

And is Friday still a good time to start?
