Any good (preferably _free_) graphics editors? - anthony - Jan 25, 2007 07:48 AM

Hi,

I've recently switched over to a Mac and i was wondering if anyone knows of any good apps for editing graphics files? I've done a lot of Java and j2me game programming and i found graphics gale and Paint Shop Pro very handy for creating game sprites and other image files.

Thanks for any tips and advice,

anthony

Just a little list of suggestions; there are many, many more...
  • GraphicConverter - the de facto image conversion/minor editing package on the Mac; shareware
  • GIMP - I've never used it, but lots of people swear by it; you'll need to install X11 to use it; free/open source
  • ArtRage - natural media painting package; shareware

Color It! has recently (at last!) updated from OS 9 to OS X.

I haven't tried the OS X version, but waay back the OS 9 version was a pretty good budget art program.

Nobody has recommended Pixen yet? It's exclusively designed for pixel/sprite art. Be careful to save often, though... it's a bit buggy.

Seashore... though it has very limited features and some bugs... but it is cocoa, so it looks good (unlike GIMP).

I normally loathe java apps, but this one is kinda nice: http://www.jhlabs.com/ie/

LOL!LOL

It's better to have too many choices than to be stuck with a lousy app!

I'd advise you to STAY AWAY FROM GRAPHIC CONVERTER. Horrible piece of software, in my humble opinion. the GIMP is free, even if it does require X11, and it's more than you need, more than likely.

What? That has to be one of the most useful programs I own. It's not an image editor if that's what you mean, but it lives up to it's namesake fantastically.
