Thanks for the specs, Carlos. I know publishing these was in response to an issue from an earlier contest; I like how you follow up on these things to make each contest better.

I admit I'm curious about who is judging this year. Is the intention to keep it a secret until the results are final? (So they don't get gift baskets from contestants? :-) If not, a press release naming the judges might be a dandy way to keep the contest alive in people's minds for the next couple of weeks, until MacWorld. Just a thought.

Thanks,
Matt

I guess it's mainly people from freeverse. After all they have to chose a game they like to be published.

I hope to be fine with those specs, if for someone it goes slow I hope they'll choose a lower screen res... (since I even bothered to put 3 possible resolutions (which is trivial with opengl, but a bit boring with blitzmax)

Perhaps not. My understanding is that the judges are going to judge the games on 3 categories: gameplay, originality, and presentation. Nothing in there about how "publishable" the game is. One hopes there's a correlation but they are not the same. Also, Carlos has historically recruited a wide variety of judges.

But it could be all Freeverse judges as you suggest. I'm not concerned either way, just curious.

Hehe, in theory, no, but in practice, that's the main thing, at least for chosing the winner.

In the rules it has been decreed: The judges, of which their number shall not diminish below 4 or exceed 6, will be nominated by the duke of freeverse.

Thanks for that tip, I'd missed that somehow. The rules state that Freeverse shall appoint the judges, and they may be from Freeverse or from elsewhere.

The rules also say that the identities of the judges will be posted at some point, not just their computer specs. But no timeline is given for that, so I suppose it could be done after the results are announced if Freeverse wanted.

>I admit I'm curious about who is judging this year. Is the intention to keep it a secret until >the results are final?
Partly because I'm a tad busy, partly because judges often dropped out at the last moment, and partly because I want them to judge without being (fill in good or bad thing.)

>I guess it's mainly people from freeverse.
No one from them. Just a bunch of 11 year olds that think Doom 3 is old-school. wa ha ha.

>After all they have to chose a game they like to be published.
They reserve NOT to publish anything. Remember that.

>Carlos has historically recruited a wide variety of judges.
My net is big but has a good many of holes so I often get last minute "Sorry, I'm too busy." so I dislike saying who the judges are until after I have their scores in hand. Smile

>The rules state that Freeverse shall appoint the judges
Actually, to be technical..
Quote:OMG Cup 2005 (the “Contest”) is being sponsored by iDevGames (the “Sponsor”)
Quote:The “Nominating Committee” will be composed of approximately four (4) to six (6) nominating judges appointed by Sponsor.
So that means Carlos & Co. have appointed the judges. (You might be thinking, wait, isn't Freeverse the sponsor? No, it is iDevGames in connection with Freeverse. Make sense? Yeah, I know, I don't get it sometimes too, but we do as we must. Wink )

>The rules also say that the identities of the judges will be posted at some point
They will be posted once the announcement of the 3 winners is carried out -- thus giving them a little headstart to run away from any sour grapes.

Cheers,
p.s. See my comment on MacWorld -- so you can "be there" when the winners are announced.

Thanks for all the clarifications, Carlos. And I'm excited about the streaming!

Wait, are you serious? The judges are 11 years old? I knew I should have put more boobs in Escort Wing, but actually, are they really 11?

If only I'd known, I would have named my game "Pwnd".

Joking aside, Carlos was pulling our legs. If you think about it, Carlos would have to work pretty hard to make them all the same age...

That bit about Doom 3 was true though. Wink

If you read it as a mental age, then it would probably be accurate for anyone who's in this industry Smile
