Vocoding - aarku - May 7, 2003 01:54 AM

I am looking for an easy way, or at least a way, to do speech vocoding. (ala n'sync and all of those over-produced pop artists.) Basically I want to impose the format characteristics of my voice on a synthesizer. I've messed around with vocoding filters in different sound apps but I haven't had any success. Any ideas? Thanks

Byyyyyyy yyyyyyyyyyyour cooooooooomand......... (Cylons)

A VST plugin by the now out of business Opcode (Boycott Gibson Guitars forever!) is what I use. It is pretty good! Now I use Prosoniq Orange Vocoder (VST). It has about 20 presets and allows you to tweak stuff as well.

Other routers..

Zerious Zocoder (spell?) but I think the dev canceled it. Search around. The name might be wrong, but I think I am close.

SoundHack which I still can't figure out completely can do the job plus much more. FREE!

Akai has a demo vocoder at:
http://www.akaipro.com/jp/global/plugs/dcvfs.htm

I don't know a thing about it though.

Logic has "Emagic EVOC20 Vocoder 20-Bit." Again, don't know about it but it should be good.

Alesis Metavox ModFX Vocoder is an external hardware box that I seen for around $99. Also a box made by Boss (Roland) too.

Steinberg Cubass should also come with a Vocoder plug-in (and Reason??) but maybe out of your price range?

If you have Windows, there is http://www.vocoder-plugins.com/

Check this site:

Note that many Analog hardware (and virtual synths) can do vocoding.

Have fun!

Reason 2.5 is in beta now and contains a vocoder among other things.

2.5 is a free update to 2.0 owners Wow

Ever since ChrisD got Reason and his O2 keyboard he never plays here anymore. How about a review?

I just got Reason 2.5, I can give some feedback...

not vocoder related but here's a bit of demo I made for a friend to show the power of the new distortion.

Well I just got reason upgraded...
Look cool so far...

They made the Icons on the back of the vocoder better so it MAKES some sense to the lay person.
Any how it all looks really cool... Like a lot of new useful effects...

I have not gotten to play with anything real yet...

Hmmm what else.

1. All the new FX have patches
so there is now and sound bank of FX patches...
I wonder what they will add in 3.0 :-)

2. The new super reverb FX unit looks cool.
Partially because it actually lets you visualize how the effect will look or modify
your sound source. That should make it easier for more people to grasp.
