Sorry, I don't know how to do that. I just use an edit field over my OpenGL view. I figure since the keyboard is showing over the GLView, I'm already hurting performance, so the text field won't worsen the situation much at that point. I can't say that I always like the look of the text field though, so if someone else knows how to do this, I'd like to know too.
