Have you seen the free apps that advertise paid apps and clicking the ad opens AppStore on an iPhone/iPod Touch? How can I create something like that?

should openURL of UIApplication work? (Although on Simulator, it opens Safari and pops an error message saying "Safari cannot open the page because address is invalid")

Yes it will work on the device, the App store App is not available on the simulator.
