I have some potential sponsors for a new contest. Now, I'd like to see the kind of participation we would have.

* It would most likely run 2~3 months.

* I'd like to have a theme of one of the following:
a) simple simulations
b) educational games
c) anything but must have particles
d) anything but must have scrolling
e) anything but must employ pathfinding

Why not just a generic contest? I'm not a fan of the last three as "themes." PyWeek's theme choices are more theme-y and fun. (Stuff like 'length of a piece of string,' 'morning fog and frosts,' 'dust bunnies,' and 'flat-packed.')

PyWeek 7 is currently underway, but I'll be good for another one in a week and a half.

Since you have sponsors, can we just have uDG '08?

I think the themes are distinctly uninspired; unless the promoter has a particular interest in a theme, why impose one as restrictive as those?

I don't think you'll be able to find out how many would enter with a poll, either.

Also, I agree with OSC, the themes aren't very good. You can pratically do anything and shoehorn particles on it, or call it a simulation, or pathfinding, or whatever, without being especially skilled or creative.

If it has to be a theme, then something akin to the famous "Measure the height of a building with a barometer" is much better suited, as it gives you some constraints, and there exist very straight forward (and boring) solutions, but also very creative ones.

If we did an unthemed 3-month contest with sponsors, that's basically uDevGames, right? I've been hoping to see uDevGames return since 2005, and I think we'd have plenty of interest if it did. uDevGames was a cornerstone of iDevGames for years, and I think bringing it back would be one of the best things we could do to revitalize iDevGames and the Mac game community in general. My feeling is that themes are better saved for smaller contests (and that those should run regularly too, if possible), but you'd get better results out of longer contests if they weren't restricted to a theme.

Carlos, let me know if there's anything I can do to help move this contest along. I'm really keen to get these things going again!

I agree that a theme is not really necessary and that a full on uDevGame contest would be great for the community.

My vote would be for a 3 month contest with no other limits.

On-topic: I don't like the "themes" idea (restriction) either. Making even simple games is hard enough as it is!

An open contest like that is more likely to get me to squeeze it into my busy workload rather a themed one.

Particles and pathing are soley for the desire for such code for the community.
Simulations because that is the genre I like and something I want to see more of.
Education because its a good genre to bring interest to the community.

I could incorporate special prizes for "Best Educational Title" and so on..

Hmmm... on second thought... everyone just make a soccer game! wa ha ha

OK, if I have enough community members that would enter, it would guarantee a good base of entrants. I will ponder over the weekend if it would turn into uDevGames 2008.
