New: Official Tetris for Mac OS X
It looks largely to be a port of the OpenGL-based versions of Tetris in the mobile phone / ipod market, but it's not too bad.

Between this and the continued improvments in Quinn, I guess I should start nailing the coffin shut as to the sales of my clone

i wouldn't bring out the hammer yet. can't you take the idea in another direction?
these are very rough ideas(and they've pobably been done before):
-multiplayer on the same board. being coop or competitive.
-i'd love to see physics. obstacles, natural elements, materials.
-3 dimensions.
-different block types. round blocks that roll? blocks that evolve, grow, duplicate?
-secondary, tertiary objectives. certain block configurations open locked areas?
i find tetris to be an extremely boring game. it needs an update!
these are the official versions "features", pfft:
"Four game variations will keep you entertained for hours:"
-by hours do they mean minutes?
"Marathon - 15 challenging levels of gameplay."
-woah, did they say 15!!222!2! omgroflcopt
"Challenge - See how far you can go in 10 minutes!"
-how far i walk away?
"Sprint - Race to clear 40 lines."
-why aren't these integer variables variable?
"Master - Instant drops — think fast!"
-heh, they ran out of ideas so fast!
"Awesome graphics and sounds heighten the Tetris experience."
-tetris features graphics and sounds? awesomeness is a matter of opinion and not a feature.
"Automatically upload your score to a world-wide Leader Board — compare your ranking against players from the around the world!"
-hahahahahhahahhahahhahhaa
"An authentic Tetris® Game designed and optimized specifically for OS X."
-i'd hope so, but i doubt it
"28.6MB"
-damn that's big
the website is also complete dodge.

I found out that the CEO of the Tetris Holding LLC that now holds rights to tetris is the guy that brought it to the US, in this documentary: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=...9909322164
You can find him here: http://www.blueplanetsoftware.com/biographies.html
Btw I read somewhere these guys harrassed various free tetris clones developers to remove their games from the web since they ranked too high on google. Looks like making tetris clones is not a great idea nowadays.

@Najdorf: didn't the Tetris Company try to shut down Quinn last year? I'd bet that this is to give them a legal foothold if they ever try going after Tetris clones on OS X - not having their own version of the game on OS X may have been a legal stumbling block to that; either that, or Tetris on the iPod has given them the idea that Mac users might play games too...
Ah, here it is:

There is a fun tetris-inspired game in the Wario game on the Wii. Would be a fun project to do with newton: http://youtube.com/watch?v=EOokWliLApk
Also maybe utilizing the macbook sudden motion sensor
.
Also, we had a thread on the whole Tetris Company / Quinn drama a while back: http://www.idevgames.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12698

I rented that last weekend. Pretty fun, but only if you have a group of people who are willing to make fools of themselves. I thought about implementing that mini-game using Chipmunk, but it needs more continuity, and the level difficulty is usually really trivial.
Some sort of fancy physics Dr Mario could be fun. On the other hand, the added unpredictability of the physics could make it frustrating.

I've tried making already-tried puzzel games with physics, I found it really hard to balance the physics with playability (too much physics-based gameplay and the player has a hard time predicting what will happen, too less and it's kind of useless), I think it's better to rethink quite a lot and make something perhaps a bit inspired by old and already tried puzzel ideas but quite fundamentally different to make it fun.
