Are texture sizes getting any bigger with time?

With the constant advance of graphics hardware, is there a general
trend to larger textures? Or are textures sizes pretty much going to
remain constant and other areas are pushing the envelope.

I take it that textures are typically in the 128, 512, 1024 pixel range?
And that this goes across all platforms (PCs, Macs, Xbox 360, PS3, etc.)?

Just curious.

Current limits of graphics hardware are 4096^2 (NVidia, since GeForce 2MX) and 2048^2 (ATI, since Radeon).

Games typically use smaller textures (say, 512-2048 for more recent games, depending on the age of the game, target market, quality settings, size of the thing being textured, etc).

I take it then that we are probably never going to see a 8192x8192 texture?

If my math is correct that is over 67 million bytes. And if RGBA? I think
I've answered my own question - as I shudder.

But don't all the different architectures (especially PS3) brag about
how much bandwidth has increased. If not textures, what then is
all this bandwidth used for? Or is it the case where it is the number of
textures and not their size which is the important criteria.

Texture size will continue to grow until it doesn't need to anymore. Yes we WILL see 8192x8192 textures in the near future (10 years). I just think of all the times I said things like "4GB, how will I ever use even half of this).

Probably textures wont grow that i big, somthing else will replace like 3D shaders but I dont know the futrure unlike jake, Wacko

Sir, e^iπ + 1 = 0, hence God exists; reply!

Perhaps they will move to procedural textures as hardware gets faster.

The optimal is of course a combination of procedural (for stuff that can be mathematically defined) and traditional textures for unique things such as people and decals and bill boards.
