2D image creation?

Ok, basicly I have alot of experiance with 3D modeling...
But when it comes to 2D image stuff (photoshop, fireworks/appleworks)
I'm horrible...
I wanted to create some buttons and menus for my current game that looked nice...
But I can't seem to make a reflection or whatever it is...
The three buttons on the top of each window is the type of graphic I want to make...
(Mac os X buttons in general have a reflection to them and I want to know how to make that part)
I was looking at a flash tutorial and found that you create a reflection then layer it over a color and flatten the image... I just can't create that reflection...
Could somebody show me or give me a tutorial?
(I have Photoshop 3.0 and Fireworks... I more programs but I don't like them)

Why not just do them in a 3d program with the camera pointing straight at it?

That would take to long... and be hard to put text on.

Was look'n at PS CS2 but can't find anywhere about what the minumum requirments are! 
(PhotoShop CS 2)
I mean... come on! what if it doesn't work on Mac os 10.2 and I get it?

I'm buying panther second hand as we speak. It's dirt cheap right now. And computer speed improves a lot.

Just do what Lurie said, only though export to some other photoshop or something and type on the object that you want the text on... It works with a few types of things...
