seems like there would be easy to find documentation. i used google aned all i found was a bunch of peoe complaining about how boardgames arnt hex squares... so how do you make a hex board?

Instead of using four sided tiles, use six sided tiles. Make regular rectangular image files contain six sided tiles, and mask out accordingly when you draw.
