There also was another modeler that I cant remember (maybe we are thinking of the same one?) that an iDGer was developing - posted some screenshots - that Im wondering about.

You might be thinking about Cheetah3D, which was also mentioned fairly recently. I haven't seen the Coalesce author guy on here in a really long time, but igame3d posted a version of the modeler a while back. I doubt it's supported any more.
There are plenty of freeware polygon modelers (probably mentioned in one of the other threads in that search) though personally I can't recommend one. Personally, I hate polygons, and had to make a program generate them for me.
