I strongly agree with the ideals in the article, but I don't agree that marketing is A Bad Thing.

The article seems to confuse marketing with advertising. They aren't the same.

Marketing can and should be done by all members of the development team. You need to recognize who you want to enjoy your game, and make sure that group of people enjoy it as much as possible.

For instance, Kill Dr. Cote isn't a game for old ladies or anyone who sues on the sight of blood in a videogame. I have no obligation or desire to cater to these people. I want to make sure the game is as cool as possible for Contra fans, Robotron freaks and the masochists who love the challenge of Ikaruga (myself included.)
