If you've still got OS 9 hanging around, you can use SimpleSound (comes with the OS) and SoundApp (freeware I believe, nonrestrictive shareware if not).

I have SoundApp in archives somewhere... but OS 9 isn't really an option...

alright, that works most excellent. My my only troubles now, is how to get a decently volumed recording (or increase the volume in post production)
as it is now, I have volume on max, and my recording is perfectly audible... but I want a normal volume for normal things.
If I crank up the input volume (via system preference) too high, I get feedback. any ideas?
[EDIT] NM about the feedback, I fixed it via turning down playback volume
