MD2 skin problems

I'm trying to convert an md2 loader (osgMD2 plugin actually) so that it will load big endian on the Mac. It's gone pretty well, except that every md2 file I've found on the web has the numSkins set to 0 in the header, and the skin and texture coord offset set to the first byte after the header. What's up with that? Does anyone have an md2 file with skins, or MD2 loading code that works on some md2's you've tested?

PakRat source could be helpful:

The Quake2 source might be worth looking at too (it's the mother of all md2 loaders after all)
