A quick check in Shikari reveals that about 20% of the time is spent in sqrt(), acos() and sin().

Don't forget those critical non-GL functions.

Shikari also reveals that somewhat under 13% of CPU time is used by the program, meaning that there's a long way to go before CPU optimizations will yield much fruit.

(My computer, YMMV).
