I've got a tank game that I've released for the iPhone and Palm, I'm currently working on the Android port and have hit a bit of a roadblock.

To control the tank I'm using controls on the left and right of the screen, push both of them forward and you move forward, both back and you go back, one forward, other backward you turn. To fire the tank's gun you just tap in the middle of the screen.

I think these are fairly standard tank controls.

The problem on the android devices is that a large number of them don't handle multitouch very well - some devices are using a touch sensor that gets easily confused and swaps touches from one side of the screen to the other when their y or x values come close the each other. See here:
